Cross Country Running

Welcome to the SRYA Fall Cross Country Program!
The program is open to beginner and returning runners in grades 3-10. Note we are expanding to 9th and 10th grade. However, 9th and 10th graders are not eligible to participate in the SRYA program if they are on a high school cross country team.

Practices will include warmup, stretching, strength work and, of course, lots of running. Practices will mainly be held at the Central Middle School/South River High School campus, with some trail runs at local parks throughout the season.  Practice days and times will vary, but are typically 3 times a week for 1 hour.

Several timed competitions will be held throughout the season at South River High School on Saturday mornings.  We will also provide opportunities to participate in optional travel meets throughout the season, which are generally held on Saturdays and Sundays.

Depending on enrollment, runners may be split into multiple teams within each age group.

Teams are split up by grades and distance:

  • Grades 3-5 (8-11 year olds) with a race length of 3km
  • Grades 6-8 (11-14 year olds) with a race length of 4km
  • Grades 9-10 (14-16 year olds) with a race length of 5km
