Cheer clinics start August 5th and are three nights a week for an hour and a half. The first two weeks of clinics are not mandatory. However, it is very important that your cheerleader is there to learn motions, jumps, sideline cheers and stunts. Once the third week starts, the two squads will split and we will jump right into learning the Pep Rally and Competition routine. Sideline cheers, motions, jumps, etc will not be reviewed once the regular season begins.
Practices will be twice per week leading up to Pep Rally and Competition. They are approximately an hour and a half starting in the evenings at 6pm.
There may be an occasion that a team will practice 3 times during a week – usually the week before competition. Practices are mandatory & necessary to learn the cheers and routines.
Cheerleaders should be on time and wear proper practice uniforms to all practice sessions. Typically cheerleaders wear shorts (not jean), shirts/tank tops and tennis shoes with their hair in a ponytail.
Sideline cheer only will not have practice after Pep Rally is over as the focus. Pep Rally typically takes place towards the end of September, early October. Games and other events will still be required.
**NO cell phones will be used in uniform and on the field.
Once the season begins, Pep Rally and Competition practices are mandatory. We all know that things come up with school, illness, and emergencies. However, if a cheerleader misses 3 or more Pep Rally or Competition practices, they will not be able to perform during the routine. This is to ensure the safety of all cheerleaders.
**Practice schedules will be announced once registration is closed. A coach or the commissioner will contact you with practice days. The tentative location will be Edgewater Elementary areas from 6-7:30pm. The days are pending until permits are received. Ideally, we would select Monday and Wednesday with Thursday as a third day if needed. Please note, we also hold some closed practices as the cheerleaders are not as distracted when families are not in the room :) As mentioned, the location is Edgewater Elementary. With the construction that is taking place at the school, we are also filing permits with Central Elementary as a back up if needed.
There will be approximately 9 football games plus playoff and championship games. Most games are at the Edgewater Park (behind Edgewater Elementary). We do not always cheer for the same football team. We try to cheer for at least each team once throughout the season. Cheerleaders are expected to arrive at all games 15 minutes early in uniform. If a home game is not scheduled, we will travel to a nearby game. Games could be scheduled on a Friday, mostly Saturday and an occasional Sunday.
Depending on what football teams make the playoffs/championship, will depend on when the sideline cheer portion will end. Typically those games are not announced until the same week and are away games. We will not cheer during Labor Day weekend.
Sideline cheer will have games every week. Sideline/Competition squad will cheer at football games every other week. The season is long with starting in August and running through November. This will allow some breaks during the season. If your cheerleader wants to cheer every week, we can possibly make arrangements with the sideline only squad to accomodate those requests.
Our plan for SRYA Cheer for the 2019 season is to participate in one or two cheerleading competition as the highlight of our year. We believe this will bring exposure to competitive cheerleading. The date/location is yet to be determined but will likely be the end of October/Beginning of November. The first part of the routine will be performed at Pep Rally and then added onto for competition. If you are registered for competition, it is required to be at all competitions.
Team and individual pictures are taken and will be available for purchase during each season. Date & times will be determined once we have our game & competition schedule. Our targeted date is early September. Depending on the numbers of registrations, team pictures and indiviual pictures could be done on two separate days. One of the SRYA cheerleader mom’s, Emily Bell, is a professional photographer and does our pictures. The pictures will be available for purchase digitally and then you can order anywhere or through her website. She does an amazing job!
Fundraising is mandatory for all cheerleaders. If you do not wish to fundraise, you can donate your $50 with your registration.
If your cheerleader does not participate in fundraising, they will not perform at Pep Rally or compete at competition.
Fundraiser coordinators and suggestions are always welcomed.
A uniform deposit of $100 – check payable to SRYA.org and must be received prior to distribution of uniform items. Each girl will receive a skirt, vest, cheer bow and bloomers. The skirt and vest must be kept and returned in excellent condition. We got brand new uniforms in 2018 and added more in 2019. Uniforms are not fit perfect to size, we have a variety and try to ensure that everyone has as close to fitting perfect as possible. But nothing is guaranteed.
When the uniform are returned in excellent condition, your uniform deposit check will NOT be cashed and given back to you at uniform collection. There will be ONE collection date scheduled. If you are unable to make that date, it is your responsibility to return it to a commissioner within 14 days or your check will be cashed.
Each cheerleader is also required to have plain white shoes and white socks for all games and performances.
Hair must be kept clear of the face at all times while in uniform. Hair will be pulled back in a ponytail with hair ribbons. No other hair accessories are permitted.
Spirit wear will be available for purchase for cheerleaders, parents, siblings, etc. All orders will be done online through Squad Locker. Details to follow.
Sideline Cheer registration is $160. Ages 3 to 18.
Sideline Cheer and Compeition is $190. Ages 5 to 18. Must be 5 by August 31st. No exceptions.
This covers bloomers, hair bow, trophy, registration costs and end of season cheer party.
Note: the majority of cheerleaders in this program are ages 3 to 12.
SRYA PEP RALLY
Pep Rally is a big event for SRYA and especially the cheerleaders. All teams are welcome to join in the parade and fun events following. Every team/squad has a tent with a tailgate party for all cheerleaders and immediate family. We request $5 per family towards pizza and have a signup sheet for each family to bring an item to contribute. Following the parade will be the cheerleading performances, followed by tailgates, DJ and tons of fun. That part is a football fundraiser.
South River High School Cheer Night
As a fundraiser for South River High School cheer, the high school cheerleaders come to a practice and teach the cheerleaders cheers, show them some stunts and tumbling, etc. Then the cheerleaders will cheer at the first half of a high school football game at the stadium. This event is a highlight of the season and loved by all those that have participated in the past two years. This event is optional and cost approxinately $20 per cheerleader. T shirts were included in that price for the cheerleaders. More information to follow. Registration for this event is also open to those who are not registered in the SRYA cheer program.
END OF SEASON CHEER PARTY
At the end of the season, we will have a cheer party. We will do something fun for the squad and have trophy distribution and other recognitions during this time.
We plan to give awards for attendance, most-spirited, best jumps, best listener, helpful teammate, etc so please encourage your cheerleader to stay attentive and positive throughout the clinics and entire season.
We are always looking for suggestions, feedback and volunteers. We would love to have a team mom(s) that can take charge of the Pep Rally tailgate, snack schedule, collect money, etc. We also look for volunteers to be additional “spots” with stunting, assisting with laying out mats, putting them away, etc.
If you have any comments/questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Looking forward to a great season!
Stacy Spadaro, Cheer Commissioner/Treasurer/Coach
